Every quilt has a story - and let me tell you about this quilt!
In early Spring I was in the Northern Illinois / Southern Wisconsin area to visit with my family. While I was there, my sister, her husband and I drove the Racine County Barn Quilt Trail.

It was a glorious Spring day and we were wowed and impressed by the many Barn Quilts that we saw.
Then I saw this Barn Quilt! I LOVED it!! In all my years of quilting, I had never seen a pattern quite like this, so I took a photo.
As we were driving and viewing other Barn Quilts, my mind kept wandering back to this Flag & Star quilt. By the time we were finished for the day, I had most of the block piecing figured out in my brain.
Here is a close up of the Flags & Stars Barn Quilt.
Fortunately, I was going to be staying with my elderly parents for a few weeks. My sister loaned me her sewing machine, I got some fabric and I started sewing!!!
As I was piecing my quilt, I kept thinking this would be a great quilt to donate to American Hero Quilts, which is an organization that makes and donates quilts to wounded, active duty military personnel.
I made a few tweaks to the pattern and soon I had a piecing pattern than fit the dimensions of the American Hero Quilts requirements!

Of course, I couldn't make just one quilt! I had to make two quilts, of two different sizes!!!

Below are photos of both quilts with the quilting.

The quilting looks complex, but it is really fairly simple. You need to know how to make the feather shape, but how you make feathers doesn't really matter. If you make the traditional longarm feathers like I do, you can quilt this! If you do the hump-hump-bump feathers, you can quilt this! If you make "hooked on feathers" feathers, you can do this! Do you make ferny feathers? You can quilt this!!!
