These instructions are easily adaptable to quilting on a home sewing machine!
LOVE SUNFLOWERS!!! Each spring, I like to plant sunflowers in my garden. The sunflowers I love to plant are the GIANT sunflowers that grow to at least six feet tall!
For details about Giant Sunflowers Click Here
I have an arbor outside my dining room window that I plant the sunflowers around. The sunflowers grow up and around the arbor, which is 7 feet tall, and I leave the sunflowers up all winter.
Yes, the sunflower heads get all dried and nasty looking, but the birds LOVE them and will feed on the seeds all winter long. When it is gray, wet and dreary (as it can get in Northwest in winter) I look at my "dead" sunflowers and remember summer days and watch the hungry birds feeding.

A few years ago I had some surgery and I couldn't work in the garden and NO sunflowers were planted! I learned that I REALLY missed seeing them. So, as any quilter would do, I designed a Sunflower block!
This block is easy to piece and there is a little bit of appliqué for the flower center. And, the applique is done with the longarm!
Now that the block was designed, it needed a setting. And, like flowers in a garden, it took on a life of it's own!
I started with a small wall quilt, which grew into a table runner and then grew into a Twin Size quilt (below right). The leaves and the centers of the sunflower are appliquéd using the longarm quilting machine!
