IMPORTANT NOTE - When working with templates you
MUST have an
extended base unit or "table" on your machine. This table MUST be
securely attached to your quilting machine.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE
TEMPLATES WITHOUT A TABLE OR BASE UNIT!!
Thread: Use what ever type of thread you and your machine are comfortable working with. I used a very dark contrasting thread (red) to quilt the heart feathered wreaths. I WANTED this quilting to show! I also used a light contrasting thread (light pink) for the fill in quilting around the heart feathered wreaths. I also used thread that matched the background fabric (white) for the fill in stitching around the border hearts.
This is YOUR quilt! Use as many colors of threads as you want on this quilt.
Other items you may want to have on hand to make your quilting easier
- 6 x 24 inch quilting ruler to make straight registration lines, or any other straight edge ruler that fits the workspace of your machine
- safety pins for pin basting. This will be discussed during the class.
Markers: We are going to make registration lines to mark the placement and boundaries of our quilting designs.
You will need a marker that you are comfortable using on a quilt top. I recommend the Mark B Gone, water soluble (blue) marker on light fabrics and a Chalk O Liner with Miracle Chalk powder in it for dark fabric. I also like using Crayola Fine Line Washable Markers.
Please note that the Crayola markers wash out with detergent and warm water. The Crayola Fine Line Washable markers can be found at nearly every office supply store and many other stores including most grocery stores. A package of 8 markers is usually less than $5.
I use the Crayola markers only on my own quilts, NEVER, EVER on a customer quilt!
If you would like to practice your quilting before stitching, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you get a piece of clear Plexiglas that will fit in the workspace of your quilting machine. (Plexiglas of this size should be about $10 or less.)
Before using the Plexiglas, take either masking or duct tape (which now comes in many different colors) and place it over the cut edges of your piece of the Plexiglas. The tape serves two purposes. 1) It protects the edges of the Plexiglas. Sometimes the edges can be a little sharp and could scratch you or tear the quilt. 2) The tape will also make a boundary or edge around the Plexiglas. This will prevent you from drawing off the edge of the Plexiglas.

You will then use markers - I recommend the Vis-a-Vis markers, available at all "big box" office supply stores, for marking on the Plexiglas. (Note: the Vis-a-Vis markers usually have 5 in a package and cost less than $10.) The marker is removed using a damp paper towel. See below left.
For marking on Plexiglas on top of dark fabric, I have found that the Expo Bright Markers work very well. See below right.
Both of these markers can be purchased in major office supply stores such as Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, etc. They can also be purchased online.

Heart Feather Guide Basting Spray Neon Thread

I like to put a "shot" of spray adhesive between the quilt top
and the batting along the border edges of the quilt. This holds the
border edges of the quilt in place and I
don't have to stitch
down the raw edges of the sides of the quilt, eliminating the chance
of pleats and puckers in the side borders.

When using templates on the longarm machine, they have a tendency
to slip slightly creating an uneven stitching line. I found that by
applying a small amount of Quilt Basting
Spray on the back (etched
side) of the templates prevents this slippage.

Heart Feather Guides
The Heart Feather Guide Story
Every quilt has a story and every professional longarm quilter
has a story about the frustrations and problems they have completing
a quilt. Many times these stories are not about major problems—like
taking out the stitching from a half completed quilt (Ask me how I
know this!!) but minor frustrations that take up valuable time. From
the minor frustrations I have experienced working with templates in
general and feathers in particular, I have created the NEW, HEART
Feather Guide Template set.
Let's go back in time a little bit - several years ago I created the Circle Feather Guide Templates which make fabulous feathered wreaths. As I was working with these templates I wondered if there were other shapes that could be made into feather guides to make other feather shapes. I worked with this idea for a long time and finally created the HEART Feather Guide Template set.
This template set works with ALL brands of quilting machines with a workspace of about 13 inches.
This TWO TEMPLATE set makes an amazing FOUR different sizes of heart shapes:
- 12 inches wide, 12 inches long
- 9 inches wide, 9 inches long
- 6 inches wide, 6 inches long
- 3 inches wide, 3 inches long
All of the heart shapes can be quilted with feathers - in many different ways. The number of variations of feathered hearts you can make is nearly limitless! You can even use the HEART Feather Guide template set to create wonderful heart borders!
